Frequently Asked Questions

Detailed technical breakdown of audits, auto-fixes, duplicate resolution, and live monitoring.

1. The Container Audit: What Gets Checked?

What exactly happens during a Dr.GTM container audit scan?

Dr.GTM connects to your Google Tag Manager container via official Google REST APIs and parses your active workspace structure (tags, triggers, variables, folders, and custom HTML templates). It runs 12 clinical heuristic audits to check for misconfigurations, tracking gaps, and performance bottlenecks.

What rules and issues does Dr.GTM flag?

Dr.GTM checks for: - Missing Google Tag (Config): GA4 or Google Ads tags present without a foundational Google Tag. - Unrestricted Conversion Tags: Conversion tags firing on "All Pages" instead of specific purchase or thank-you events (which inflates conversion numbers). - Duplicate Conversion Tags: Multiple conversion tags sharing identical triggers and vendor IDs without deduplication. - Missing event_id Deduplication: Purchase or conversion tags missing unique event_id parameters, causing double-counted conversions when users refresh order confirmation pages. - Missing Currency & Value: Purchase tags missing currency (e.g. "GBP") or revenue value variables needed for accurate ROAS reporting. - Inconsistent Event Naming: Mixing snake_case and camelCase event names, which GA4 treats as completely separate events. - Consent Mode v2 Gaps: Tags missing required ad_storage, ad_user_data, or ad_personalization consent signals mandated in the EEA since March 2024. - Undefined Variable References: Tags referencing variables that do not exist, which resolve to undefined at runtime. - Client-Side Performance Bloat: Large inline Custom HTML scripts (>10KB) and DOM variable overloads that degrade website PageSpeed score. - Unused Container Bloat: Unreferenced tags, orphan triggers, unused variables, and empty folders.

2. The Auto-Fix Engine: How Does It Work?

How does Auto-Fix work step-by-step?

When you click "Apply Fixes" in Dr.GTM: 1. Dr.GTM creates a new, isolated Draft Workspace inside your Google Tag Manager container (e.g. "DrGTM Clean Audit - [Timestamp]"). 2. It batch-applies approved changes in safe dependency order (e.g., creating missing variables first, setting up Consent Mode v2 checks, moving items into clean vendor folders like "Google Ads", "Meta", and "Consent", and removing unused orphan triggers). 3. The changes are saved into your draft workspace. 4. Dr.GTM never overwrites or publishes your live container automatically. You open your GTM dashboard, inspect the new workspace preview, and click "Publish" whenever you are ready.

Is there any risk of Dr.GTM breaking my live website tracking?

No. Because Dr.GTM writes all modifications to a separate draft workspace, your live container remains untouched until you review and publish the draft workspace yourself inside Google Tag Manager.

3. Duplicate Conversions & Triggers: What Happens?

What happens if Dr.GTM detects duplicate conversion tags?

If multiple conversion tags for Meta, TikTok, Google Ads, or Bing share identical triggers or parameters, Dr.GTM flags them as Critical. In the report, it highlights the identical tags and provides a recommendation to consolidate triggers or add tagFiringOption = ONCE_PER_EVENT.

What happens if a purchase tag is missing an event_id?

Without an event_id, if a customer refreshes their order confirmation page or reopens the email receipt link, Meta and Google Ads will count two separate conversions. Dr.GTM flags missing event_id parameters and provides 1-click guidance to map them to order IDs or transaction hashes.

What happens to duplicate triggers and duplicate variables?

Dr.GTM compares the internal parameter configurations of all triggers and variables. If two triggers or variables have 100% identical conditions, Dr.GTM groups them and offers a 1-click cleanup to point all tags to a single consolidated trigger and delete the duplicates.

4. Live Event Monitoring & Dead Tag Alerts

What is the Dr.GTM Live Monitor tag?

The Live Monitor is a lightweight tracking listener tag that measures real-time tag firing events on your website. It records event name, tag ID, container ID, and timestamp.

How do Dead Tag Alerts work?

If a critical conversion tag (e.g., purchase or lead submission) that normally fires daily stops sending events for more than 24 hours, Dr.GTM detects the gap and sends an automated Dead Tag Alert email to your registered account.

5. Billing, Credits & Account Management

How are credits consumed?

1 credit is used per full container audit scan. You receive 1 free audit credit every UTC day. Additional credit packs can be purchased as one-off packs with no recurring subscriptions.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. We offer a 14-day refund window for any unused credits in a purchase lot. You can request a proportional refund directly from your account billing section (/refunds).

How do I delete my account and data?

You can delete your account at any time via account settings or a DELETE /api/account/delete request. Deletion instantly purges your stored OAuth refresh tokens, audit history, and live event logs from our database.
