How to find unused tags, triggers and variables in Google Tag Manager

Old tags, orphaned triggers and forgotten variables slow containers down and make every change riskier. Cleaning them up is worth doing, as long as you do it carefully.

What counts as unused

  • Variables that no tag, trigger or other variable references.
  • Triggers that are not attached to any tag. Check that they are not used as blocking triggers first.
  • Tags that have been paused for a long time.
  • Empty folders left over from earlier clean-ups.

Clean up safely

  • Create a version first so you can roll back.
  • Delete tags first, then triggers, then variables, since items depend on each other in that order.
  • Watch for variables referenced by other variables, or read by custom code on the page.
  • Check the result in Preview mode before you publish, and add a version note.

What to do with paused tags

A paused tag does nothing, but it still clutters the workspace and can be switched back on by mistake. If a tag has been paused for months, note why, then remove it. Version history lets you restore it later if you need to.

Before you delete anything

  • Look for tag sequencing: a tag may be set as another tag's setup or cleanup tag.
  • Check blocking and exception triggers, which are easy to miss because no tag fires from them.
  • Search Custom HTML for variables written as {{name}}, because those count as references.
  • Note what you removed in the version description so the change is easy to explain later.

Why it is worth the effort

A leaner container is easier to hand over, quicker to debug, and less likely to hide a duplicate or a tag with no consent settings among the clutter.

Find unused items with Dr.GTM

Dr.GTM lists unused tags, triggers, variables and folders with counts, plus paused tags and duplicate trigger configurations. Its fix option puts the changes in a draft workspace so you can review the difference first, and it never publishes for you.
